Pastor Román Bernaldez
Nearly twenty years ago, Román and his wife Celia were the first couple to graduate from a three-year Bible Institute course designed for indigenous people from the rain forest. He is currently the pastor of the small church in his village of Nueva Luz (New Light) on the Bajo Urubamba River, the President of the Matsigenka Association of Maranatha Evangelical Churches, and the vice president of an organization of indigenous churches located throughout the jungle. Celia directed the children’s ministry in New Light for many years until exhaustion made it impossible.
For twenty-five years, against all odds, Román and Celia have cared for their daughter Vinolia who has been totally helpless from birth. As she lies on her mat on the floor, she is dependent on them to be fed, changed, bathed and loved. Her only responses are the happy or sad noises easily interpreted by her loving family.
As a busy pastor, Román´s heart longs to be able to spend more time ministering on an individual basis to the physically and spiritually needy in his community. He also carries a concern for the pastors in other communities under his oversight. Some of his responsibilities require that he travel for distant meetings but no stipends for travel are provided. He has two adult children attending university on scholarships that only cover tuition. He is trying to expand his cacao plantation with the hope that in three or four years he can generate enough income to cover his needs, but some days it all seems overwhelming.
